International Cricket 2008 - New Zealand |
|
South Africa |
A Brief Introduction &
Fixture List England’s recent Test series victory in New Zealand was their first overseas series win in three years, so it is probably fair to say that the Ashes win on home soil a few years ago did not presage a new Golden Age of English cricket. 2009 is, of course, an Ashes year, and the main concern for many England fans has been the avoidance of a whitewash similar to what happened in Australia rather than dreams of victory. However, many in the England camp feel that the corner has been turned, and that there is a new depth to the squad. The first visitors this summer are New Zealand, and with the now retired Stephen Fleming absent, Daniel Vettori and his team are rebuilding and should hopefully have their work cut out to avoid another defeat. The South Africans are a different matter. If England feel that they now have enough competition for places among the bowlers to field a decent attack, it is a sobering thought that they have only Sidebottom in the top ten ranked Test bowlers (at 10) while South Africa have Steyn (1) and Ntini (5). South Africa also boast the second best ranked Test batsman in Jacques Kallis (and Wisden’s best cricketer of 2007), while their captain Graeme Smith leads the ODI rankings. It should be an interesting summer.
